Throughout my time at the University of Mary and my involvement in other organizations throughout my community. I have had the opportunity to experience diversity in many different ways. Through these many experiences, I have not only had the chance to serve alongside diverse people groups, but also been able to take lessons from cultures different than my own and bring them back to my own. This has allowed for me to have an authentic application of diverse experiences and given me the opportunity to better help my diverse students.
Northern Ireland
During my time here, I was able to experience a diversity of thought and religion. Being a place of great conflict, this was a very enriching experience that allowed me to see ideas from both sides of an argument and see how they can still work together for a greater goal through the idea of reconciliation. |
DAPL Protest Camp
Getting to volunteer at the school of primarily Native American students provided me the chance to meet with many different individuals in that culture and learn how I can adapt my
teaching to meet a culture's specific needs. My limited
time there also helped open my mind to alternative views, as
I talked with others and saw their reasoning for ideas/actions.
Cameroon, West Africa
Getting the opportunity to work on service projects and run daily classes in Africa is an experience like none other. I was able to be one of the lead teachers for the classes and had to adapt my teaching style to fullfil the needs of the African children. This taught me many different lessons, including how to differentiate instruction for very diverse student populations from a completely different socioeconomic status when compared to their American counterparts. |
