My teaching philosophy is quite simple; students learn through experience. This is key within the area of social studies. Students need to properly experience government, history, and geography in order to learn. Social studies are not simply learned by memorization of information, but the application of it. This application not only allows students to gain the content knowledge they need, but also increases their citizenship, 21st Century Skills, and value of education. Through these areas, my students will then be able to not simply learn social studies content, but also how to be a better citizen. As they apply social studies along the way, the students must also see the value they have. I must create a safe place for ideas to be discussed and improved upon. Students need for their idea of who they are within the world to remain intact while they learn. Then, they will be able to have experiences that prepare them for the future, as they have an authentic education that can improve their lives and our community.
